Residence permit

A residence permit gives permission to enter and stay in the Republic of Slovenia for a spe-
cified time and a specified purpose, as regulated by the Aliens Act. All foreign nationals plan-
ning to work, study, do voluntary work, etc. must obtain a resident permit.

The first resident permit for temporary residence in the Republic of Slovenia can be issued
only as a single permit for temporary residence. The application for the first resident per-
mit has to be submitted to a diplomatic mission or a consular post of the Republic of Slove-
nia abroad or to a relevant administrative unit in the Republic of Slovenia. If all conditions are
met, the administrative unit will issue a permit for the first temporary residence and send it
to the diplomatic mission or a consular post of the Republic of Slovenia, where it will be ser-
ved upon the applicant. The first permit for temporary residence must be acquired before
entering the country, except for extraordinary cases defined by law.

Issuing residence permits is the responsibility of administrative units.
