University of Primorska, established in 2003, is the regional university
that academics and the wider coastal community had longed for since the
post-war years. Its story began in the 90s when a small group of people
started thinking about a university in the Primorska region and developed
a vision of the university, its faculties, and study programmes that would
attract young people, with the goal to help them on their paths to adulthood
and careers.
From the beginning, UP’s mission has been to strive for excellence, become
a respected institution, and achieve global recognition. In practice, this means
to conduct education and scientific research in professional and creative
ways and to share responsibility for the balanced development of Slovenia,
both nationally and globally. Our activities are in line with the national
programme for higher education and guidelines for the development of a
common European higher education and research area, with a particular
emphasis on the Mediterranean region.
We are proud of our achievements in recent years. In 2016, we won the
biggest research grant ever funded in Slovenia, for the building of the
Renewable Materials and Healthy Environments Research and Innovation
Centre of Excellence (Innorenew CofE). This past year, a branch of Russia’s
elite Lomonosov Moscow State University was established in Koper. In
2020, we will host the prestigious European Congress of Mathematics, with
events throughout the Primorska region. In less than 20 years, our vision
has been realised.
The success of these past few years has set a clear path for the future – but
its foundation remains the quality and engaging programmes we offer our
students. And so, let me invite you to read this brochure about our courses
in Slovene and English, and become part of that future.
