jevo, he was a member of the Association of Composers of Bosnia and Her-
zegovina, as well as of certain bodies within the Association. 4
Recognised as one of the most important Slovenian composers of
the second half of the 20 century, Škerl’s name appears in encyclopae-
th
dic publications and overviews of Slovenian artistic production. Howev-

er, a scholarly monograph that would encompass all aspects of Škerl’s life
and creative work has yet to be written. This paper is a contribution to his
biography, focusing on the part of his life and artistic journey connected
to Sarajevo.
Sarajevo Period
Dane Škerl came to Sarajevo to take a position at the Academy of Music,
where he was engaged from September 1, 1960, to September 30, 1970, ini-

tially as an assistant, and later as a lecturer and associate professor, teach-
ing composition, harmony, counterpoint, canon and fugue, and musical

forms. In 1970, the Bosnian-Herzegovinian composer Milan Jeličanin

(1935–1999) completed his composition studies in Škerl’s class. Alongside
