ional development, sustainability, and marginalization 64 Bled
The town of Bled lies in the north-western Alpine region of Slo-
venia and is renowned for the glacial lake of the same name. It has
been a traditional tourist destination since the middle of the 19th
century, when a Swiss hydropath named Arnold Rikli founded the
Institute of Natural Healing here. His method of treatment includ-
ed cold and warm baths, as well as different physical activities. To-
day, the Municipality of Bled is the third most visited town in Slo-
venia, which attracts over 300,000 international tourists per year.
The town’s idyllic location along the 2.12 km long and up to 1.3 km
wide Lake Bled is surrounded by Alpine peaks; however, the most
recognizable feature of the area is Bled Island with its Church of the
Assumption.
