Considering a number of typical characteristics, Slovenia has been divided into three
winegrowing regions: Podravje, Posavje and Primorska, and each of these further into
winegrowing districts.
The winegrowing region of Podravje is divided into the following districts:
• Slovene Štajerska with sub-districts:
• Maribor
• R adgona – Kapela
• L jutomer – Ormož
• H aloze
• Central Slovenske Gorice
• Š marje - Virštajn
• Prekmurje
Podravje extends along the low hills of north-eastern Slovenia, on both sides of the River
Drava, gently descending to the Pannonian Plain. Here, the cool, fresh Alpine summer
mingles with the dry, hot Pannonian continental summer. Moderately warm days and cool
nights during the maturing of grapes create less sugar and more acids, which emphasise
gentler floral and fruity aromas.
