Summary
With the awareness of the importance of an interdisciplinary approach,
the present monography deals with the fields of tourism, sports tourism
and the economic, socio-cultural and environmental impacts (triple bot-
tom line) of the organization of major sporting events. The research mod-
el is based on the Social Exchange Theory with support of scientific lit-
erature, consists of economic, socio-cultural, environmental and tourism
impacts caused by the organization of major sporting events (Andriotis
and Vaughan, 2003; Choi and Sirakaya, 2005; Gursoy and Kendall, 2006;
Zhou and Ap, 2009; Ntloko and Swart, 2008; Ohmann et al., 2006; Kim,
Gursoy and Lee, 2006; Ritchie et al., 2009; Lorde et al., 2011; Martin and
Barth, 2013; Prayag et al., 2013; Delamere, 2001; Deery et al., 2012).
Besides a review of scientific literature and academic consultations,
the research part of the monography contains an empirical study using
quantitative methods of measurement of economic, socio-cultural, envi-
ronmental and tourism impacts. The survey was conducted in the Mu-
nicipality of Koper area in October and November 2013: by using a struc-
tured questionnaire, we obtained the opinions of 746 randomly selected
local residents of the municipality. The sampling was taken with a sys-
tematic approach according to the previous review of the demographic
profile of the population of the MOK.
The results of the research provide some basis for developing guide-
lines for monitoring the impacts caused by major sporting events for
future development of sport events tourism in Municipality of Koper.
The obtained short-term results presented in the monography represent
a solid basis for a long-term research into the measurement of econom-
