llenges of longevity society and nutrition for older adults problemi in izzivi v prehrani starostnikov | nutrition problems and challenges in the elderly

Introduction: Aging is associated with physiological body changes, changes
in body composition, movement and thought patterns, changes in nutrition-
al intake and needs, changes in protein metabolism and often decreased body
weight, which in turn increases the risk of frailty and sarcopenia, even in peo-
ple with overweight.
Methods: In the past five years National Institute of Public Health Slovenia took
part in two important projects in the area of ageing – research and practice
oriented PANGeA (http://www.pangeaeu.org/) and intersesctoral and policy
supportive of AHA.SI project (www.staranje.si).
Results: Nutrition recommendations for older adults living at home and in lo-
cal communities, with special emphasis on frailty, were prepared in the PAN-
GeA project, based on bed rest study and mass mesurements. The results of
the PANGeA project were included in AHA.SI project, within which the back-
ground documents for longevity strategy were prepared, which were harmo-
nized with many stakeholders. The AHA.SI outcomes were directly used in the
process of preparing the Longevity Strategy (SDD), adopted by the Slovene
Government in 2017.
Discussion and conslusions: Slovene society is rapidly aging, therefore main-
taining an active and healthy population up to the oldest age is of extreme im-
portance. The national strategic orientation in the field is a prerequisite for the
economic success of society and the well-being of its inhabitants.
Keywords: ageing, frailty, nutrition for older adults
