Introduction: Both the number of elderly in the population and their propor-
tion within the total population are increasing at a much faster rate than any
other age group. Consequently, it is estimated that in the next decade the num-
ber of persons in institutionalized care will be also doubled. An essential fea-
ture of institutionalized elderly is the presence of impaired physical perfor-
mance, mobility disorders, and functional decline. Therefore, it is important
to counteract these conditions and preserve the independence of the elderly.
Methods: Twenty elderly women (84 ± 8 years) were randomized into two
groups, control (CG, n = 9) and intervention (TG, n = 11) group. Test bat-
tery included anthropometric measurements and functional test (Short Physi-
cal Performance battery – SPPB) and hand grip. Anthropometric and function-
al test were measured PRE and POST three months of intervention with elastic
resistance training (ERT).
Results: Baseline and post-training testing showed a significant group × time ef-
fects for SPPB total score (p = .005), as well as gait speed (p = .019) and chair
rise (p = .005).
Discussion and conclusions: Recently, a task force of clinical researchers em-
phasized the need to implement new strategies to prevent or slow down disa-
bility and functional decline in nursing homes residents. ERT sessions are rela-
tively simple for implementation, and could therefore, represent a useful tool
to counteract functional decline in institutionalized elderly.
