                 Introduction
The Department for History of Croatian Music was founded in 1980 and
                                                   2
initially employed only four researchers. The cornerstone of its library
was the donation by Josip Andreis of about 1,300 volumes of books and
journals: already during his lifetime, Andreis had decided to place his li-
brary in an institution to which he was closely connected. On the other
hand, the Department of Music and Musicology of the Academy provided
its archival materials, among which was the musical legacy of the compos-
er Vittorio/Victor Radeglia, i.e. Viktor Radelja. Over the past forty years,
various projects have led to archival research in multiple locations, pri-
marily in church and secular institutions outside Zagreb, but the prepa-
rations for relocation the contents of the Department’s library and collec-
tion after the Zagreb earthquake in 2020 provided an impetus to review

1 This research was financed by the Croatian Science Foundation with project IP-
2020-02-4277 “Institutionalization of modern civic musical culture in the 19 cen-
                                                                            th
tury in the area of civilian Croatia and the Military Frontier.” The recording of Vit-
torio Radeglia's composition Serenade aux etoiles (not written as in French: étoiles)
for the purposes of writing this paper and its presentation at the Ljubljana conferen-
ce was made in February 2024 by pianist Iva Ljubičić Lukić.
2 At that time, the Department was called the Institute for Musicological Research of
the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts. See more about this in: Vedrana Juri-
