summary
Based on the written above, we can conclude, that the development of
tourism and the number of visits depended on many factors: natural resourc-
es, transport connections, the role of doctors, public and private entities and
finally the abilities of the destination itself, the people in charge of the pro-
motion (posters, brochures, advertisements in newspapers) and entertain-
ment. In addition to the reasons mentioned above, the concentration of visi-
tors and the popularity of the places were also affected by, for example, wars
and political crises, which the managers of tourist spots could not control.
Some other factors recognized in history, such as the role of intermediaries
and tourist agencies in the discussed period of time, did not come to the fore.
Partly they were present, for example in health spa resorts, where spa manag-
ers and health committees were integrated and connected with foreign agen-
cies that promoted their destination. During the research, these factors were
only roughly mentioned and included.
In the research, we analysed a relatively wide spectre of tourist destina-
tions or types of tourist destinations. In the analysis, we originated from the
established methodology (economic historians) in the international area. We
checked the existence and the effects of factors for tourism development. The
discussed tourist destinations, as well as those of related type, had specific
founders, initiators and developmental policies. Some destinations achieved a
high recognisability on national or even international level, others somewhat
or significantly smaller. The success of a certain health resort and tourist des-
tination depended on the location itself, the natural resources, accessibility,
medicine and the interest in investing in tourism infrastructure, but also am-
bience and current fashion trends.
We discovered that tourist destinations or typologies of destinations
followed the contemporary European fashion trends. The seaside resorts
(in winter) developed later, but they combined with multiple forms of tour-
ist health spa offers, namely winter-climate and summer-bathing. The latter
was even in timing advantage in comparison to the European area during the
summer season, as the Mediterranean Sea destinations gradually oriented to-
wards the summer season only at the beginning of the 20th century and were
established throughout the 1920s and 1930s. On the other hand, Grado and
Portorož were established as summer destinations at the very beginning al-
ready. The initial health spa activities of the seaside spots were gradually as-
suming more and more resort-type features which were financially and eco-
nomically more thriving.
