Ecstasy and agony
The paper will present the Hungarian literary, political and art ma
gazine „Új Symposion” (1965 – 1992) from Novi Sad (Voivodina,
Serbia). This was the most progressive Hungarian (neo)avantgar
de periodical. Its subversive literary and visual experiments were
inspired by Yugoslavian (Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, Slovenian etc.)
artists and philosophers. The contribution will discuss the prob
lems of minority literature (Deleuze-Guattari), the possibilities
and forms of artistic autonomy in the ambivalent Yugoslavian sys
tem, the problem of »multiculturalism controlled from above« (Al�
pár Losoncz) and the problem of cultural and political provincialism
(Radomir Konstantinović). The paper’s hypothesis is that the ambi
valent political system led to the creation of equally ambivalent ar
tistic strategies.
