Wine Tourism
with Geographic Origin

The present monograph deals with a fairly under-researched field in the
Slovenian context, namely the geography of wine, wine regions and their
identities. The main purpose is to identify the elements that shape or de-
fine the identity of a wine region and consequently determine the devel-
opment of wine tourism in the researched area. This has been investigat-
ed on the case of the Slovenian Istria wine-growing district (wine region).
To gain a better insight and to present its characteristics and specifics as
thoroughly as possible, the author has taken an integrated approach, plac-
ing the region in the wider regional, national and international context
of wine growing, wine making, and the wine market, also by presenting
some of the most famous and most interesting wine-growing regions in
the world.

Slovenian Istria stands out with its production of red wine grape va-
rieties, among which Refošk ranks first. This old autochthonous Istrian
variety has eventually become the second most widespread grape variety
(according to wine growing areas) in Slovenia. In Slovenian Istria, Refošk
(Refosco) has a special status. It is the leading variety (almost half of all
vineyards are planted with Refošk), suitable for the production of qual-
ity wines for all occasions. In recent years, however, Malvasia (Istriana),
the most widespread variety on the Istrian peninsula, is increasingly com-
peting with Refošk. Both wines - together with Yellow Muscat and some
old nearly forgotten varieties - are the main wine identifiers of the stud-
ied wine-growing region.

In the selection of grape varieties, which defines the selection of typ-
ical regional wines, we encounter a dilemma regarding indigenous and
